INSTRUCTIONS TO AUTHORS
Abstracts must be submitted electronically to Fergus Thomson, the Scientific Committe Chairman  as a WORD97 document, preferably using Times New Roman font (10 point except for the title).

It is intended that all accepted abstracts will be published in Australas. Phys. Eng. Sci. Med. The complete abstract, including title, author names, affiliations and text, should fit into a frame 175 mm wide by 110 mm high.To achieve this set  margins on A4 paper to Top 2cm, Bottom 15cm. Left 2.5cm and Right 2cm. This will result in a half page abstract with a maximum of about 350 words. The abstract should be formatted justified and must contain only one figure or one table. Figures and tables should be include in the file as an embedded object.

Completion of an Author Information form is required. This form can be completed either on line or downloaded as a WORD97 document and emailed to Fergus Thomson.

All abstracts will be reviewed and the author nominated on the submission form informed by 30th August. Please indicate on your submission form the preferred method of presentation, the preferred session theme, and if you would like your presentation to be considered for any of the prizes. This will be taken into consideration by the program committee.

Abstracts must be received by 29 July 2002.

A computer with a CD and floppy disk drive will be provided for oral presentations requiring the digital projector. Presentations should be in PowerPoint 2000 format or earlier, otherwise a connection will be provided to the digital projector and the author will be responsible for providing their own computer to drive the projector. Slide projectors and overhead projectors will also be available.

PRIZES
The prizes detailed below will be available for presenters at this conference. Applicants must indicate which prize or award they wish to be considered for at the time of abstract submission. A paper is only eligible for consideration for one prize or award.

IEAust Young Biomedical Engineers Award

A maximum of AUD $3000 funding to attend and present a paper on their work at a relevant international conference. This award is to be presented to a student whose studies are leading to an engineering qualification in a field related to biomedical engineering, or a biomedical engineer who is either in the process of satisfying entrance to, or is a member of the college of Biomedical Engineers. The work being considered for the award must be the person’s own work. The recipient must be 35 years of age or younger at the time of the conference. Only papers being presented orally will be considered for this Award (ie no posters).

Judging Criteria: The abstracts will be considered by a panel of referees nominated by the College of Biomedical Engineers for inclusion in a session of the conference specifically for presentations by the short-listed applicants.

Assessment of the abstract and oral presentation will be based on consideration of the following areas:

  • Technical content
  • Delivery and presentation style
  • Originality
  • Relevance to biomedical engineering and value to the wider community
  • Discussion and ability to answer questions

Varian Prize

AUD $1000 and a plaque. The criteria for the award are:

  • Best oral presentation related to radiotherapy
  • Strong technical content with emphasis on original work as opposed to reviews
  • Quality of delivery – easily understood and good audio-visual presentation
  • A member of the College (ie invited speakers are not eligible)

Gammasonics Prize

AUD $500 is offered for the best presentation in the field of diagnostic physics.

Computerized Medical Systems Student Prize

This prize of AUD $250 will be awarded for the best student presentation, oral or poster format. To be eligible, candidates must have registered for the conference with a student registration.

Conference Committee Prize for Best Poster Presentation

AUD $500 for the best poster presented at the conference. All poster presentations accepted and displayed will be eligible.
