INVITATION

It is with great pleasure that the Organizing Committee extends a very warm invitation to all physical scientists and engineers associated with the teaching, research and clinical application of physical sciences and engineering in medicine to join with us at EPSM 2005. In 2005, this conference incorporates the inaugural Australian Biomedical Engineering Conference (ABEC). As a consequence, the conference has two distinct themes: ‘Translational Research” for the physical scientists and ‘Ageing – People, Practice and Technology’ for the Biomedical Engineers, technicians and managers. These two themes refl ect issues and directions that are being faced by all professionals in medicine and it is hoped that the conference will provide assistance in greater comprehension and lead to positive actions in these areas.

There will be two distinct scientific programs offered to all participants. However these programs will be laid out in such a way that the participants can readily move from either program, thereby optimizing their opportunities. At the present time, we have four confi rmed keynote speakers of very high international standing along with a further eleven invited speakers – many you will already be familiar with. Short biographies of each speaker are included in this brochure and I’m sure you would agree they are all more than worthy of your attendance at the conference. As well as the high quality scientifi c programs, workshops, impressive trade exhibition and the essential personal interactions, the city of Adelaide and its surrounds offer all participants an exciting range of social activities. The Barossa and Clare Valleys, along with McLaren Vale, are only a short drive away and the Adelaide Hills make a pleasant drive across to the Murray River Basin and the water activities available in that area.

The Organizing Committee are thrilled to be able to host the forthcoming conference and we hope you will come to join us in the scientifi c sessions, the good food, the pleasant surrounding and participate in some of the local delights.
