The Medical Physics Section provides professional radiation oncology medical physics services to enable the reliable, precise and safe delivery of high-quality radiation therapy services using complex equipment, software and techniques within the Central and Northern Adelaide Local Health Network regions. These services are delivered state-wide under auspices of the CALHN Cancer Program.

We seek a qualified Radiation Oncology Medical Physicist, that is an individual eligible for registration on the ACPSEM Register of Qualified Medical Physics Specialists and Radiopharmaceutical Scientists in Radiation Oncology (RO QMPS) and who will maintain registration as a RO QMPS.

Under the management of a Principal Medical Physicist, the occupant of this position:
  • Operates as a professional radiation oncology medical physics specialist exercising a very high level of professional responsibilities and initiative within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Acts in a responsible, professional, and efficient manner, and applies recognised medical physics standards and practice, in providing high quality medical physics services.
  • Ensures the day-to-day maintenance of routine medical physics services and the performance of the more complex tests that result in effective provision of a client centred medical physics service.
  • Undertakes research and development in the radiation oncology medical physics specialist area.
  • Provides education, training and development to staff, students and public in the areas of radiation safety, radiation oncology medical physics and related disciplines.
  • Complies with Policies, Procedures and Instructions as detailed in the Department’s Quality Management System.

This position provides medical physics services and contributes to teamwork across multiple sites in collaboration across multi-disciplinary groups, principally at the Royal Adelaide Hospital and Lyell McEwin Hospital. Within the CALHN Cancer Program there are rapid advances in technology and equipment, with associated ongoing requirement for up-to-date clinical skills, education and personal/professional development. There is a strong associating with Australia’s first proton therapy centre, the Australian Bragg Centre for Proton Therapy and Research.

The program makes use of multifaceted complex radiation producing equipment that includes electronic, electrical, software and mechanical components requiring a degree of familiarity and competency with these components. The position is clinically focussed that requires interactions with patients and carers in performance of duties. Some out-of-hours work may be required for equipment calibrations, quality assurance and project work.
