Job Description
Primary purpose of the role
The role is deputy to the Director of ACDS in determining the service’s strategic direction, oversight and operations. The role supports the Director through coordination of the overall audit schedule, quality management, budget, and service agreements of the ACDS dosimetric auditing program, and will further develop the ACDS’ close partnership with the clinical customers. You will provide direction and support to the team in day-to-day operation of the ACDS.
Key accountabilities
- Support the Director of ACDS in ongoing oversight and operations of the audit service, providing reports to ARPANSA executive management and the Commonwealth government, and stepping in for the Director as required.
- Support the Director of ACDS in determining the service’s future directions.
- Oversee the audit program for the ACDS. Key contact with customer clinical management teams, providing specialised advice and anticipating their needs regarding the audit schedule.
- Lead and manage a small team of direct reports, acting as a mentor to develop individuals in their roles and providing regular performance assessment feedback.
- Perform complex dosimetry measurements for the ACDS, both in ARPANSA and in radiation oncology facilities. Measurements will include treatment dose assessment using phantoms, beam characterisation and linac output. Perform high-level data analysis and interpretation of audit results.
- Review audit reports and recommendations regarding non-optimal outcomes to ensure sound scientific basis and clarity while remaining sensitive to the customer’s clinical needs. Manage the ACDS response to out-of-tolerance outcomes and follow up. Present quarterly reports to the Clinical Advisory Group.
- Liaise with the ARPANSA Quality Manager to ensure the ACDS quality management systems are maintained and implemented in compliance for NATA accreditation.
- Develop the ACDS budget and service agreements, and review quarterly financial reports.
- Develop and maintain relationships with the Medical Radiation Services Branch executive and other services in ARPANSA that provide financial, legal, security and other governance, technical and administrative support to the audit program. Represent the ACDS on internal committees.
- Collaborate with radiation oncology facilities, clinical trials groups and professional bodies to improve the audit services and tailor them to clinical requirements, including abiding by state and federal health department recommendations. Present reports to the Clinical Advisory Group, as required.
- Liaise with international peer organisations, such as TROG Cancer Research, the IAEA Dosimetry Audit Network and the Global Harmonization Group for RT QA (GHG) to maintain the consistently high standard required to improve the safety and quality of patient outcomes globally.
- Contribute to research and development projects leading to peer-reviewed scientific reports and publications. Participate in external committees, conferences and workshops of national and international relevance.
Working under the broad direction of the Director, you will lead and manage a small team of direct reports to successfully deliver the audit service to radiation oncology facilities throughout Australia and New Zealand. The work entails direct engagement with the customer clinical management teams, providing specialised advice and anticipating their needs regarding the audit service. The role includes the quality manager responsibilities for the ACDS, working with the ARPANSA Quality Manager to maintain NATA accreditation.
A key function of the role is to perform dosimetry audits for the ACDS at radiation oncology facilities and lead audit development as required. You should achieve trainer status in at least one audit level and maintain a lead audit workload. You will liaise with radiation oncology facilities across Australia and New Zealand to promote the service and improve and tailor it as required for clinical requirements.
The Clinical Operations Lead represents the ACDS to professional radiation oncology organisations, maintains relationships with clinical trials groups and contributes to publications and conferences of national and international relevance.
The position may be based in either of ARPANSA’s offices in Yallambie, VIC or Miranda, NSW. Flexible work arrangements may be negotiated. The role includes regular travel to perform audits in Australia and New Zealand. If based in Miranda, the role will require several short-term deployments in the Yallambie office each year.
Job Requirement

You must possess a tertiary degree in medical physics, radiation therapy or science/applied science, from an Australian educational institution or comparable, preferably with postgraduate qualifications. Experience in radiation oncology facilities in a management or senior level role would be highly regarded. Experience or further qualifications in quality management, budget development, contracts or financial management would be valuable. You will be thoroughly familiar with radiotherapy treatment practice in Australia or New Zealand and ACDS audit procedures, with an in-depth understanding of the processes and techniques involved in radiation dose assessment, particularly in areas of existing and emerging technologies being implemented in radiation oncology facilities in Australia and New Zealand.
In undertaking this role, you will possess highly developed leadership and management skills, including the ability to lead change and manage a small team of direct reports. You will have a proven record of developing positive relationships and the ability to influence diverse stakeholder groups and staff, particularly in the radiation oncology clinical sector and professional organisations. You should possess well developed self-management skills including the ability to identify a client's needs and maintain a high level of service standard. You will operate with a high degree of autonomy while working cohesively and cooperatively within a multidisciplinary team environment, display initiative and be able to exercise soundly based independent judgement in carrying out your functions. The role requires attention to detail and a demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritise competing demands to meet deadlines.
You must possess excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to explain complex scientific concepts clearly and deliberately to internal and external stakeholders.
You must hold Australian citizenship or possess permanent residency status leading to citizenship and be prepared to travel interstate from time to time as required. ARPANSA requires all new employees to obtain and maintain a Baseline security clearance as a condition of engagement.
Selection criteria
The selection criteria for this role are:
- Expert working knowledge of radiotherapy procedures and radiation dosimetry, in particular, with respect to existing and emerging radiotherapy technologies in Australia.
- Highly developed leadership, organisational and time-management skills. Proven ability to prioritise competing demands and lead a multi-disciplinary team to deliver timely outcomes within a challenging and changing environment.
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills with client focus, and ability to effectively engage and develop collaborative working relationships with the radiation oncology related professions.
- Ability to perform complex dosimetry measurements, high-level data analysis and interpretation of results as part of the national auditing program.
- In-depth knowledge of quality management and safety systems and in the assessment of risk from radiotherapy procedures. Experience in the development and maintenance of a quality manual.
- Experience in budget development, contracts and financial management.
- Ability to produce key reports and presentations, and ability to impart technical information to executive management and radiation oncology professionals.
