Job Description
The Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA) is the Australian Government's primary authority on radiation protection and nuclear safety. Our purpose is to protect the Australian people and the environment from the harmful effects of radiation, through understanding risks, best practice regulation, research, policy, services, partnerships and engaging with the community.
The Australian Clinical Dosimetry Service (ACDS) is a dosimetry audit service offered by ARPANSA to Australian and New Zealand radiotherapy centres. The ACDS was launched in 2010 and delivers a world-class radiotherapy dosimetry audit program to private and public customers on a cost recovery basis, where the client pays for the services. The audit program assesses the dosimetry of external beams radiotherapy improve patient safety by reducing systemic dosimetric risk to the patient through remote and on-site audits of the radiation delivered. The ACDS works closely with professional radiation oncology organisations and conducts research leading to scientific contributions in publications and conferences of national and international relevance.
The key duties of the position include:
In this role you will support and perform ACDS dosimetry audits for radiation oncology facilities throughout Australia and New Zealand. The work entails direct engagement with the customers’ medical physicist and radiation therapist teams, gathering the planned data, performing the audit measurements and generating audit reports.
In addition, you will provide technical, scientific and quality support for the dosimetry audit service including the OSLD and film dosimetry programs, equipment calibration and maintenance. This will require you to undertake ionising radiation dose measurements on ARPANSA’s linear accelerators, X-ray and gamma ray sources.
The ACDS undertakes research and development projects to improve and expand dosimetry audit capabilities to keep pace with emerging technologies introduced into radiation oncology clinical practice. The ACDS develops specialised software packages and Monte Carlo simulations for data analysis and interpretation of audit results. In this role you will have the opportunity to develop your experimental, scientific computer programming and analytical skills.
The positions are based in ARPANSA’s office in Yallambie, Victoria. The roles require significant on-site attendance for the use and access of resources and equipment. Flexible work arrangements may be negotiated. You will be required to travel regularly throughout Australia and New Zealand.
There are two non-ongoing positions available. One non-ongoing maternity leave contract, and one non-ongoing 24-month contract.
Key Accountabilities
- Perform ACDS audits and develop an understanding for the clinical relevance and any actions arising from the audit outcome.
- Liaise with clients, analyse data and prepare reports.
- Support the OSLD and film dosimetry procedures for audits within the national radiotherapy audit program.
- Perform complex dosimetry measurements for the ACDS. Measurements will include treatment dose measurement using phantoms, beam characterisation and linac output.
- Perform extensive and comprehensive testing measurements of dosimeters, associated equipment and audit protocols.
- Participate in ACDS research and development activities as required, which may lead to conference presentations or peer reviewed publications.
Eligibility
To be considered for this position you will have a tertiary degree in medical physics, science/applied science in a field involving radiation, or radiation therapy from an Australian educational institution or comparable. You should understand the processes and techniques involved in dose measurement and quality systems in radiotherapy. Postgraduate qualifications or experience in Australian radiotherapy treatment practice is desirable.
You should be familiar with the fundamentals of radiation physics and dosimetry particularly as applied to clinical radiotherapy techniques. An awareness of quality assurance activities in a radiation oncology facility is an advantage. Experimental and analytical skills along with good writing and communication skills are necessary. Additional skills such as advanced scientific programming, Monte Carlo modelling or clinical treatment planning experience would be highly regarded.
You must hold Australian citizenship and be prepared to travel interstate or overseas from time to time as required. ARPANSA requires all new employees to obtain and maintain a Baseline security clearance as a condition of engagement. Your employment is subjective to pre-employment checks as required.
Selection Criteria
The selection criteria for this role are:
- Knowledge and experience in the physics and technologies applicable to radiation therapy.
- Scientific, programming and research skills, showing an ability to work independently to complete projects.
- Ability to work in a team and ability to engage with multidisciplinary professionals.
- Well-developed written and oral communication skills.
- Knowledge of planning techniques in modern radiotherapy treatments (such as stereotactic body or cranial techniques, motion management, or specialist treatment platforms).
- Knowledge of experimental uncertainties and how they relate to clinical outcomes.
Eligibility
Employment with ARPANSA is subject to:
- conditions prescribed within the Public Service Act 1999.
- Australian Government Security Vetting Agency (AGSVA) granting a security clearance at the required level.
- evidence of citizenship status required.
- evidence of qualifications required of the role.
