Supervisor Support - Regional Catch-ups
Over the past few months, the ACPSEM have launched ROMP Supervisor Catch-ups across NSW/ACT, VIC/TAS, QLD, SA/WA/NT and NZ to strengthen the supervisor network and share approaches to supporting registrars through TEAP. We also shared College updates, including recent curriculum refinements and reminders to review exam timetables and registrar milestones early.
A consistent theme has been time: balancing clinical workload with supervision, and reducing “admin drag” so supervisor time is spent on coaching, feedback and developing judgement—not clicking through systems. Many groups raised the navigation and sign-off burden - positive suggestions for changes to ALEX and ways to streamline the process are being collated.
Supervision practice themes have also been explored: setting clear expectations early, helping registrars take ownership of their progress, and calibrating entrustment decisions so registrars don’t stall at low levels when they’re capable. Sites shared strategies that are working well—regular check-ins, flexibility in teaching styles, involving the wider physics team as trainers while maintaining assessment consistency, and structured exam preparation. Discussion in how we support critical thinking and professional judgement (“beyond technician level”), particularly when motivation varies between registrars, with a key takeaway being to escalate emerging issues early (rather than waiting for formal reviews) so that departments and the College can make workable adjustments.
These catch-ups are continuing monthly (approximately every 4–6 weeks). They’re a safe forum to raise challenges, celebrate wins, share resources, and surface ideas for improvement back to the College. If you supervise or train registrars—please join in, bring one challenge and one win, and help us build a supportive community of practice. Don’t forget you can also claim CPD via your own reflection after attending.
