FREE EVENT --The ACPSEM Medical Image Registration Special Interest Group (MIRSIG) Online Webinars: August 2020

We are a group of medical physicists and radiation therapists that are keenly interested in all aspects of image registration.  As image registration is such an integral part of radiation oncology, we would like to extend our knowledge in the field to all of our radiation therapy community.
A lunchtime series of webinars will be conducted on the first Tuesday of the month from 12-1pm (AEST).  This series is free and open to all RTs, Physicists and ROs.

Talks and learning objectives:
Talk 1:
New Advances in Image Registration– Presented by Jason Dowling
Learning objectives:
• Identify advanced applications for registration (including atlases)
• Describe how rigid, affine and deformable registration works
• Identify the components of image registration algorithms
• Recognize the elements of advanced image registration (e.g. deformation with masking or iteration, deep learning)
• Describe ways to detect and identify causes of registration failure

Talk 2:
Training and Using Image Registration Clinically - Presented by Laurel Schmidt
Learning objectives:
• Identify the changing roles of RTs and Med Physicists with Image Registration
• Identify what is needed for a training program for staff with image registration
• Recognise the requirements for setting up an image registration training database in your department’s software
• Be aware of a safe approach to implement new technology based on a risk vs benefit approach

Presenters:

  • Michael Jameson is a medical physicist with interest in MR guided adaptive radiotherapy.
  • A/Prof Jason Dowling is a Principal Research Scientist and a Research Team Leader with the CSIRO Health and Biosecurity business unit, where he leads the Medical Image Analysis research team. Jason and his team work closely with clinicians and industry partners to automatically analyse and report information from 3D medical images (including MRI, CT, PET) for disease diagnosis and monitoring, treatment planning, and treatment delivery. He is currently leading projects on MRI based radiation therapy treatment planning, radiation oncology clinical trial analysis and quality assurance, and non-invasive MRI-based lung structure and function assessment.
  • Laurel Schmidt is the research radiation therapist at St George. Her work with clinical trials has led to a close relationship with TROG where she was doing clinical trial QA using first SWAN and then MIM software. Laurel has followed up her initial training with image registration, to set up protocols for both MIM and Velocity. Her involvement with image registration has included giving a number of presentations around Australia as well as training staff from other departments.
